We arrived in Cachora, a small village not far from Cuzco. We spent the first night in a small typical hostel, before starting the hike the next morning. As you can see the doors are quite small for european giants like David!
Here our breakfast with "mate de coca", a sort of coca leaves tea that helps to resist the altitude.
We ordered housemade "Chicha de Jora", a typical alcoholic drink made of fermented corn. But after the first look at the jar and a first try, we decided to throw it away.
The houses of cachora are still made of mud bricks, some of them without painting.
Here we are, ready to start the 4-days hike that will take us to choquequirao and back.
Fortunatelly we had 5 mules to carry our luggage, food and camping equipment. We also had a personal cook who made us typical peruvian and international food.
The hike is quite difficult as we go from 3000m down to 1500m and then back up to the site of Choquequirao at 3000m! But this has the advantage that their are very few people on the way!
Here at our different camps along the way.
The last 3 hours were really difficult, and we had the impression we wouldn't arrive. But finally, we started to see the first inca terraces on the slopes. We were tired but happy!
