After El Chaltén we went to another village called "El Calafate". Here there's the famous Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the most beautiful and accessible glaciers in Argentina. We made two visits, the first one just to take a look from the terraces and the second one on a one-day hike.
It's amazing to see so much ice together! and so big! The wall is about 50m high above the water surface and 180m under it. The funny thing about this glacier is that it's the only one that has not been receeding in the last years, like other glaciers in this region. This is because it is fed by the Southern icefield which receives a lot a precipitation from the Pacific Ocean. Its ice surface is stable (doesn't get bigger or smaller) but it moves towards the lake forming a natural damm.
Our second day started also on the panoramic terraces where we accidentally met our spanish friend Susana from Ghana. It was funny to see her hier, 10.000km away from where we met!
We then took a boat to the other side of the lake to start our hike on the glacier.
We walk over natural rivers and lagoons created by the melting of the ice. It is funny to think that we are just 200m above see level, and the temperature is over 20C.
At the end of the hike, we had a real "whisky on the rocks" with crushed ice from the glacier!
Finally, in the village we were reminded of how far we are from everything as we saw this sign!
