Otavalo, about 2 hours North of Quito is a disturbing combination of authentic Ecuadorian life and complete tourist attraction.

It is the main handcraft market in the country, so of course, many tourists come here to the "plaza del Poncho" (it's the real name!)
But at the same time you get a very nice insight of typical clothing and customs of Ecuador.

Here the official currency is the US-Dollar since almost 5 years. That is really shocking at first but costs remain relatively cheap even compared to Colombia. The most amazing thing for us to discover was the one-dollar coin designed especially for Ecuador (on the one side you see the United States logo and on the other one an indigenous quechua woman carrying her children on the back)
